Another song which required extensive use of maps of North America. Sometimes, as a lyricist, place names jump out at you. Once I had stumbled on Old Wives Lake in Canada, along with some other place names near there, like Medicine Hat and Moose Jaw, I knew I was onto something. I read the story behind the name Old Wives Lake and what had happened there in the mid 19th Century, involving Cree squaws and a raiding party of Blackfoot. One version recounts that the squaws were slaughtered. Another that the Blackfoot warriors were so impressed with the Cree squaws' courage, that they spared them. I prefer the latter.
