Sometimes about halfway through writing a song, you get a sudden, ghastly feeling that you are unconsciously ripping off someone else's melody. I immediately thought of the song 'Suzanne' by Leonard Cohen. I had a listen to it and thought, yes, there are similarities in the opening two lines, plus I say 'down to the river' and he says 'her place near the river'. But aside from that, you couldn't call it a rip. Having decided that I was on safe ground and could proceed without accusations of plagiarism, I thought it only right to mention him in the song itself, as a kind of salute to the great man.

On a cold December morning, I went down to the river
Saw smoke rings rising up towards the sky
I followed their direction to some rushes by the water
To the shadow of a man and fishing-line
In some way I felt drawn to make my presence known
And so with that intention in my mind
I stepped on broken branches brushed my fingers on the bushes
But he didn't move or redirect his eyes

In a softened voice I asked him to pardon my intrusion
He shook his head then turned to me and smiled
He talked about the Ancients and he sang like Leonard Cohen
And told me of the old, forgotten times

The sun became an amber, with sparks above the fire
While hours stretched across the fading light
He answered every question with a calm serene demeanour
And scattered jewels of wisdom in the night
