about

No idea what this one is about. But there is a story behind the final verse: what the lyric is referring to is a scenario where a transvestite falls in love with the preacher's son, who then dies in a car accident. The tranny is heartbroken and starts to visit the grave every Sunday. But one time she is off her head on drugs and decides to dig up the grave. She had always fantasised about the giving the preacher's son a blow-job. So she digs it up and opens up the coffin. Of course, all she sees is the skeleton. But undeterred she leans down into the coffin to give the skeleton a blow-job. She is wearing mascara, and as she locates the skeleton's genital area, her eyelash brushes over the shin-bone. Hence the line: 'smears of mascara in the dust of an upper shin-bone'.

lyrics

V1: 13 summers in the shadows of a long lost sun,
These last two years saw hailstone blizzards all June
Six-pack Sasha's in a budgie-cage all day long
Skewered on the barrel of a blackened eye, bloodshot-gun
Skewered on the barrel of a blackened eye, bloodshot-gun

V2: 14 moons in the oceans of a hard rain-storm
These last two weeks heard Mama sing Tom Waits songs
Innocence workin' in a prison-yard ten years on
Weather-beat numbers in the cracks of a hammerhead-stone
Weather-beat numbers in the cracks of a hammerhead-stone
13 summers in the shadows of a long lost sun.

V3: 15 colours in the feathers of a raven's crown
These last two nights saw party-fears fever hit town
Telescope Tommy's got a phone-box seven floors down
Shattered on the lens of a mega-volt skin flash-gun
Shattered on the lens of a mega-volt skin flash-gun

V4: 16 seconds on the watch of a hangman's arm
These last two days heard nine o'clock church-bells sound
Sex-change Sally's got his eye on a preacher's son
Smears of mascara in the dust of an upper shin-bone
Smears of mascara in the dust of an upper shin -bone
13 summers in the shadows of a long lost sun
